If you write a statement such as;
"Women are disproportionately poor in the UK today"
You must indicate where you got this information from and how you can support this statement.
To indicate where you got the information
You must credit the author Women are disproportionately poor in the UK today (Women's Budget Group 2005).
To show how you can support this statement you could do either of the following;
Define - by explaining more fully Women are at greater risk of poverty than men.
Illustrate - by giving an example of what you are mentioning Reports taken from the Women's Budget Group regarding women's poverty can reveal.....
Provide statistics - by using recorded figures According to findings taken from the Governments Gender and Poverty Report, 14% of women are living in households that are earning 60% lower than the average income (Guardian 2004)
Quote - by using an author's own words "Research findings and women's testimonies demonstrate that women are at greater risk of poverty than are men, and are more likely to suffer recurrent and longer spells of poverty" (Women's Budget Group, 2005, p3)
Use a secondary text - to confirm the original statement Oxfam (2007) stated than 1 in 5 people in the UK are living in poverty and that there is a high proportion of this that are women.
Refer to research studies - using findings to support the original statement The Joseph Rowntree Foundation (2006) reported their findings on poverty in the UK and found although the government is working to tackle poverty it still excists and it is apparently dispropotionate in that more women are living in poverty than men.
Note observations - usually only documented in placement essays, where information gained from direct observation is required
